August/September/October 2009

What now!

 Summer is over and the beautiful fall weather is here. A favorite time of year for hunting… I mean antiques of course!! There have been lots of new people in the shop just enjoying the slower pace of Shediac and the cooler temperature along the colorful coastline. Michelle and I are busy outside refinishing stuff and working on the last little bits of furniture on the “to-do” list before the white fluffy stuff comes and it gets too chilly to work outdoors.

 In the retail world October means that we should start bringing out, believe it or not, the CHRISTMAS decorations… Yikes! So I thought to myself why not find a way to enjoy fall and all its beauty for just a bit longer. With the last of the warm sunny days upon us, I was thinking maybe now would be a great time to get together and plan something fun for this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. I was sitting in the shop the other day admiring some of the artwork on display and thought to myself how much fun it would be to get all the artists together for one big bash. I ran into the house with this great idea and couldn’t wait to share with Roger. And in true form, as soon as I entered the house with a big smile on my face, the words were uttered… what now! So, I say how about Curio Antiques hosting a…

“FALL FROLIC WITH THE ARTISTS

Sunday October 11, 2009 . What a perfect time of year to gather a handful of our favorite artists, some food, hot drinks, a crackling bonfire, and a colorful canopy overhead. That sounds like a perfect day to me!! This is an open house and all are welcome. We open at noon on Sunday and will be here until 5pm .

 Featured artists;

Folk Artist Kerras Jeffery

To call Kerras Jeffery unique would be an understatement and to call his folk art studio eclectic would be a disservice.  He has a style that is definitely his own and an imagination that seems to know no bounds. Where you may see a wooden float for a fishing net, he sees a sheep.  An old wrench is a fish tail. Horseshoes magically become...a horse!

Kerras is crossing the Confederation Bridge from Prince Edward Island to come and spend the day with us and we couldn’t be more excited. Get ready for a good giggle!!

Artist Brigitte LeBouthillier

We are excited to welcome back our friend Brigitte who will be painting live here at the shop. The pieces she creates are light-hearted, free-spirited, and engaging, taking viewers from the real to the magical. A real treat for the eyes!

Artist Suzanne Dallaire

 Suzanne, a Psychology graduate of Moncton University, completed Graphic Design at the Dieppe Community College and has been self employed in Arts since 2000. She feels privileged to be able to work in an artistic field and is inspired by the maritime scenes that surround her. Although her main interest is in pastel work, Suzanne also works with acrylics and mixed media. Her use of vibrant colors and simplistic style make her work distinguishable and unique.

 Other invited artists that have not yet confirmed but we’ll keep our fingers crossed they will be able to come;

Metal artist Scott Aiken

Painter Amber Lounder newladyimg4859.jpg

Folk Art painter Patrick Melanson

 Still hip to be square

Who says that just because Cubert is a small car that he can’t deliver an eight foot long harvest table? It amazes me how much we can cram into this little car. If anything, at least we keep the neighbors entertained!

Remember this one!

Before…After… After the after.

Yes, we had to paint it. The day we did the painting I had Michelle come in to work because I knew it would be too hard after all that effort to strip it and then turn around paint it! But I have to remind myself once a piece is sold it is no longer mine and the customer wanted it done. I will admit it looked beautiful in their space and it works for their needs and décor. So, I’m happy they’re happy.

Question and Answer time

Q:

"How old does a thing have to be to be an antique?"

A:

The definition of "antique" is complicated. According to U.S. Customs regulations, items more than 100 years old can be brought into the country duty free. So, anything made before 1909 is now an antique. The dictionary says an antique is one of the oldest of its type. That explains how an antique automobile or computer can be much less than 100 years old.

Most people use the words "vintage" and "collectible" to describe anything made in the past that is collected. This includes most of the items bought at flea markets, house sales (yard sales), such as toys, sheet music, radios, folk art, comic character and TV show memorabilia and almost anything that relates to the years from 1909 to 1999.

By the strictest definition, everything gets to be an antique if it exists for 100 years.

We hope to see you on October 11th and we will catch up next month.

Talk to you soon,

Darrell
